Ever been greeted by a swarm of fruit flies when you remove the lid from your compost bin? Same!
The trick....add more carbon aka "brown" materials! 🟤 Dead leaves, twigs, torn paper or small sticks will all do the trick.

When there are flies buzzing around it's because there's an abundance of "greens" aka nitrogen 🟢 in your compost bin from food scraps and the likes. If you aim to make a "compost sandwich", layering brown and green material in your bin this will quickly take care of the problem as well as reduce any smells!

Spring is here and we have just picked the last of our oranges for the season! Time to give out trees a little love.
Here are my top tips for caring for your citrus...

🍊Citrus need 2 feeds: one mid spring – when soils have warmed, and one mid summer.

The last, mid summer feed is really important for young trees, to inspire strong growth while it's warm, boosting them to be a little bigger and bolder before they take on winter.

🍊 First, remove all rotten fruit from under the trees to prevent disease

🍊 Sprinkle citrus fertilizer around the 'drip line' when you fertilize, dig it in and water well and/or cover with a layer of mulch or compost.

This evening I felt like I was winning at life...h

This evening I felt like I was winning at life...homemade tortillas served with fresh ingredients 🍅 🥕 🌶️ 🫑 fresh from the garden. Accompanied not with a cliche glass of wine, but a tasty mocktail of nourishing #essentialoils and my daily #ningxiared antioxidant and vitamin drink- delish!

To top it all off, this past year I've dreamed of making my own #sourdough, and last week I finally took the plunge, bought a course, and my daughter and I have made it our mission to master sourdough together! 🍞

Mostly because it's so much better for our gut, but also because I don't agree with the govt force medicating the population, and it's such a wonderful activity I can do with my daughter. We can't wait to explore the delicious world of sourdough creations (watch this space!)

I'd say it's been a pretty good day ☺️

This week we harvested the community corn patch 🌽 The harvest was a lot of fun but unfortunately not as bountiful as we initially hoped.

Still, any seasoned gardener will tell you that every growing season is about learning and trying something new next time.

So...here are my top 3 learnings from growing corn this year:

1️⃣ We planted too late (around New years). If we'd planted before Christmas the plants would've been bigger and stronger, resulting in a higher yield

2️⃣ Corn has an ideal harvest window of two weeks. This is when it's the sweetest and most juicy. Miss this and the starch in the corn rises making it chewy and unsuitable to store. Slice it off and pop it in the freezer

3️⃣ Beware of pests! Army worms, ants and rats got to our corn this year due to the fact we harvested late. Lucky them, lesson learned for us.
