Feeding my family healthy, homegrown food is my motivation

Hi, I’m Elle Reed

The green-fingered veggie gardener behind The Potager Project. No, I’m not in my 50’s and I don’t have a house full of animals! I’m not what you’d call your stereotypical gardener and that’s one of the reasons why I started this blog.

I used to think it a bit ‘uncool’ admitting to others my age that my hobby was veggie gardening until I found them saying, “I wish I knew how to grow my own vegetables”. I soon learnt that gardening doesn’t come naturally to everyone and not everyone has the opportunity to try it – whether it be limited space, limited knowledge or lack of resources.

So began the idea of a modern gardening blog dedicated to under 35yr olds (or the young at heart!) wanting to try their hand at growing their own vegetables.

Let me ask you:

  • Do you have little or no idea where to start when it comes to growing your own vegetables?
  • Do you have a reputation for killing every plant you’ve ever owned?
  • Do you want to save money or be healthier by growing your own food?

If you answered yes to any or all of the above, then this blog is for you. I’ve been gardening most of my life but I don’t profess to know everything about vegetable gardening – in fact, I’ll be honest and say I’m still learning a lot too – so let’s go on this journey together and start growing!

I find so much satisfaction in using vegetables I’ve picked from my own garden only moments earlier.

If you’ve been sitting on the fence for a while or feeling overwhelmed with the thought of growing a garden, then be inspired by my wonderful sister-in-law.

A couple of years ago she decided to try her hand at growing her own vegetables. With absolutely no prior experience, she started at the very beginning; searching the web, joining various Facebook groups and getting advice from my parents (who happen to be gardening pros).

It wasn’t long before she’d taught herself the basics and now just a year later she has a productive potager garden in her backyard where she and her kids regularly pick their own vegetables for dinner!

This is my dream for all of my readers! Whether it’s a few herb pots, a potager or a full garden plot, I sincerely believe that we can all start somewhere in growing our own edibles and in doing so, provide healthier food for ourselves and those we love. So join me as we go on this edible food journey together.

My promise to you as my reader is to steer clear of foreign gardening terminology, keep things simple and prove that anyone can start growing their own vegetable, no matter what their age or budget. So let’s do this!
