How to Make the Best Compost for Growing Vegetables

Spring is here and we have just picked the last of

Spring is here and we have just picked the last of our oranges for the season! Time to give out trees a little love.
Here are my top tips for caring for your citrus...

🍊Citrus need 2 feeds: one mid spring – when soils have warmed, and one mid summer.

The last, mid summer feed is really important for young trees, to inspire strong growth while it's warm, boosting them to be a little bigger and bolder before they take on winter.

🍊 First, remove all rotten fruit from under the trees to prevent disease

🍊 Sprinkle citrus fertilizer around the 'drip line' when you fertilize, dig it in and water well and/or cover with a layer of mulch or compost.

This evening I felt like I was winning at life...h

This evening I felt like I was winning at life...homemade tortillas served with fresh ingredients 🍅 🥕 🌶️ 🫑 fresh from the garden. Accompanied not with a cliche glass of wine, but a tasty mocktail of nourishing #essentialoils and my daily #ningxiared antioxidant and vitamin drink- delish!

To top it all off, this past year I've dreamed of making my own #sourdough, and last week I finally took the plunge, bought a course, and my daughter and I have made it our mission to master sourdough together! 🍞

Mostly because it's so much better for our gut, but also because I don't agree with the govt force medicating the population, and it's such a wonderful activity I can do with my daughter. We can't wait to explore the delicious world of sourdough creations (watch this space!)

I'd say it's been a pretty good day ☺️

This week we harvested the community corn patch 🌽 The harvest was a lot of fun but unfortunately not as bountiful as we initially hoped.

Still, any seasoned gardener will tell you that every growing season is about learning and trying something new next time.

So...here are my top 3 learnings from growing corn this year:

1️⃣ We planted too late (around New years). If we'd planted before Christmas the plants would've been bigger and stronger, resulting in a higher yield

2️⃣ Corn has an ideal harvest window of two weeks. This is when it's the sweetest and most juicy. Miss this and the starch in the corn rises making it chewy and unsuitable to store. Slice it off and pop it in the freezer

3️⃣ Beware of pests! Army worms, ants and rats got to our corn this year due to the fact we harvested late. Lucky them, lesson learned for us.

I'm going to tell you a secret...sometimes I long for a bag of prewashed, precut carrots! 🤦 Especially when it's 5.30pm, the kids are hungry and you have to go out in the rain to dig up carrots for dinner! Then you still need to wash and prep them! 🥕

Growing your own food involves extra work and it's messy! But you know what? I know exactly what has been sprayed on my veggies, what's been added to the soil and how fresh the produce is....all things considered, I'll take the extra prep time and dirty sink any day!

There are many benefits to growing your own food but my number one has to be the cost saving of growing fresh, organic produce at home.

Yes there is a cost to growing a garden, but when you're making your own #compost and saving your own seeds, it's minimal!

Here's what you can enjoy from #growingyourownfood

👉Eating organic without the high pricetag
👉If you forget something you can go outside and grab it
👉You have control over your seed supply
👉Produce is FRESH as possible and therefore highest nutritional value

Every day I pop out into my garden and every week I do a big harvest for the week ahead. If I was to buy this harvest from the supermarket this is what I would pay at non organic prices and all of my produce is organic, so really I should double these costs…

Carrots 🥕 $2.50/kg

Butternut 🎃 $6.50ea

Cucumber 🥒 $2.69ea

Tomatoes 🍅 $6.49/kg

Avocados 🥑 $2ea

Potatoes 🥔 $3.99/kg

This week's fruit & veggie saving = $47.87

Organic savings equivalent = $95.74

Valentine’s Day is over, but there’s a way to keep your flowers fresh for longer. A team of researchers has found that adding lemongrass essential oil to your vase can increase the life of cut flowers by 4 days or longer 🌺🌹 Pretty cool huh!?

In a study, published in the journal Scientific Reports Tuesday, researchers from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, explained how a splash of lemongrass essential oil could solve premature wilting in gladiolus flowers thanks to its antimicrobial and antioxidising properties.
