July 8, 2024 at 9:12 am #4158Elle ReedKeymasterI’ll go first!
Hi everyone! I’m Elle from New Zealand
🍅 Favourite Veggie to Grow: Tomatoes! There’s nothing like a sun-warmed tomato straight from the vine, and when they grow you get such a high yield from them!
🍅 Top Tip: I use coffee grounds to keep the slugs away from my lettuce. It works like a charm! ☕
🍅 Veggie Challenge: I’ve never been able to grow brussel sprouts (I know a lot of you are probably thinking – why would you want to! haha). I thought it was my climate until I heard that a friend in my city has grown them before. So now I’m determined to master them!
Now it’s your turn! Drop your introductions below and let’s get this ‘garden party’ started! 🌻🌽
July 8, 2024 at 9:25 am #4163IslaParticipantHi Elle, I am excited to be part of this community and have a place to ask questions but also share gardening knowledge! Here’s a little about me….
My name is Isla and I live in California.
– I love growing peppers, especially in my hobby greenhouse. 🌶️ They thrive in the controlled environment, and I get a great variety of colors and flavors!
– My top tip would be that I swear by companion planting. Pairing certain plants together not only saves space but also helps with pest control and boosts growth. My tomatoes and basil are best friends! 🍅🌿
– In terms of a Veggie Challenge, I’m still trying to perfect my eggplant growing. They do well in the greenhouse, but I haven’t quite nailed the timing for the best harvest yet. But I’m getting there!
I look forward to connecting in this community!
July 8, 2024 at 9:58 am #4166vondoParticipantHi community
I’m Yvonne from the beautiful Bay of Plenty in New Zealand.
I can’t say I have a favourite vege to grow but enjoy planting a harvesting carrots – love the excitement of figgy them up to see what is under the surface!
I’m like you Elle, never been successful at Brussel Sprouts but I LOVE them so would welcome any growing tips!
I’m rather busy and don’t like weeding so save my thick cardboard- from appliances and larger items and lay it down between crops or between rows and weigh it down with bricks and water it. It breaks down eventually but really works a treat keeping the weeds at bay!
Happy gardening all!July 17, 2024 at 9:40 pm #4168Flowers You Can EatParticipantHi to all you fabulous gardeners!
I’m Annie, I live in Brisbane Australia and have a wonderful little veggie patch! But my first love is actually growing flowers you can eat! Many of these beauties can be used to supplement your veggies or salads on the plate and also make wonderful companion plants for veggies.
Maybe something to try doing!Elle has some great articles on this site to get you started growing flowers as companion plants for veggies.
Looking forward to hearing how you go with this!

August 4, 2024 at 6:32 am #4212Mikal ThapaParticipantHello, Namaste to everyone.
I am Michael (Mikey), from the place of the highest mountain, Nepal. It’s been quite a while I started gardening, and in so far experience, I love growing peppers and spinach, because they are the most consumed veggies by our family and they are easy to grow too. 🙂
I remember, during monsoon the slugs were everywhere destroying our garden, back then I had little idea about gardening and as a remedy I sprinkled salts everywhere and my Mom was furious ! However, now that I know, I am trying coffee grounds for sure, thanks Elle…
I have progressed so far under my mom’s guidance, and that one veggie that I want to master would be cucumber, oh ! I love them.
Once, while I planted beans. I realized gradually with time it was dying. I was worried and I did everything I could on my knowledge at that time. Sadly, I couldn’t do anything. Later, when my mom returned home. She told me that there was problem in soil. It was a lesson to me that soil composition is crucial for good harvest.August 8, 2024 at 8:01 am #4255Katya KramerParticipantHi, all! I’m Katya, and I’m gardening from my backyard in South Africa
Favourite Veggie to Grow: My absolute favourite veggie to grow has to be tomatoes! They’re so versatile and can be used in just about anything. I love that I can make sauces and salsas with them, and if I’m lucky enough to have a big harvest, I can freeze the sauces to use in the off-season. Plus, there are so many different varieties, from juicy heirlooms to sweet cherry tomatoes.
Top Tip: My go-to gardening hack is companion planting. It’s such a natural way to keep pests under control without resorting to chemicals. For example, I love planting basil near my tomatoes; not only does it enhance their flavour, but it also keeps pesky bugs at bay. And marigolds are my secret weapon—they’re like little bodyguards for the whole garden! By planting the right combinations, you can create a harmonious garden where everything thrives together.
The Veggie I’m Determined to Master: The one veggie I haven’t quite mastered yet is eggplant. No matter what I do, the plants struggle to yield fruit. Last year, I tried everything — different soils, watering schedules, even talking to the plants for encouragement — but nothing seemed to work. Despite that, I’m not giving up! I’m determined to conquer eggplants one day and enjoy a homegrown ratatouille from my garden.
Maybe someone could give me some tips?
August 8, 2024 at 8:21 am #4256Katya KramerParticipantHi Isla,
Katya here. I see you are a skilled pepper grower! I grew my first batch of Bishops Hat this year and am a bit stuck after harvesting now. If I prune the bush, will it snap back next year in spring or is it an annual that has to be grown from a seed again?
