    Hi Elle,

We have just had a new deck built and to the left of it (about 1 1/2 metres away)is our fence. My husband and I were wanting to build a planter box there for herbs as it would look great and be so handy but I’m an absolute beginner and wondering if herbs need full sun as it would be in shade for a lot of the day.

    Thank you,
    Gemma

    Hi Gemma,

Congrats on the new deck! A planter box for herbs sounds like a fantastic idea, both for the look and the convenience. Many herbs do prefer full sun, but there are plenty that can thrive in partial shade. Herbs like mint, parsley, cilantro, and chives are more tolerant of shady conditions.

Make sure to use good-quality soil and keep an eye on watering, as shaded areas can stay moist longer, and you don’t want the roots to get too soggy. Also, consider placing the planter box in a spot where it might get a bit of morning or late afternoon sun, if possible.

Hope this helps! If you would like to learn more, you might find my Easy Guide to Growing Herbs helpful: https://thepotagerproject.com/guide-to-growing-herbs/
