I’m wondering, what are the best herbs to grow indoors year-round? Any herb growing tips would be much appreciated!

Hi Isla, growing herbs indoors is a great, cost-effective way to have fresh herbs on hand all year-round. I always recommend herbs as a great place to start for beginner gardeners as they are pretty hardy plants. These would be my top five herbs to grow indoors in pots:

    1. Basil: Loves lots of sunlight and is perfect for pasta, salads, and pesto. Make sure it gets about 6 hours of sunlight a day.
    2. Mint: Easy to grow and great for teas, desserts, and cocktails. Just keep it in its own pot, as it tends to spread quickly.
    3. Parsley: A versatile herb for soups, salads, and garnishes. It can handle lower light conditions but prefers some sun.
    4. Thyme: Needs lots of light and adds a wonderful flavor to roasted meats and vegetables. Trim it regularly to encourage growth.
    5. Chives: Great for a mild onion flavor and grow well in low light. Snip the leaves as needed and they’ll keep producing.

A few herb growing tips to keep in mind…Most herbs need around 6 hours of sunlight a day. If natural light is limited, consider using a grow light or a smart garden like the ones I talk about here: https://thepotagerproject.com/click-and-grow-smart-garden-review/

When it comes to watering, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot!

And finally, soil. Use well-draining pots and fresh potting mix to give your herbs the best nutrients and start to life.

Hope this helps, look forward to hearing how you get on Isla!
