    Hi all, I’m Katya

Growing up with my grandmother, the garden was our sanctuary. She firmly believed in the importance of growing your own produce, a tradition she passed down to me through countless hours spent together among the plants. I can still recall the afternoons we spent building towers out of reeds for the green beans to climb. My hands would sting from the prickly hairs of baby marrows, which I’d dutifully wash off, savouring the fresh, earthy scent. These experiences cultivated a lifelong connection with food, cooking, and the rewarding garden-to-table process.

When I moved away from home and began buying my own groceries, I noticed a stark difference in the quality and flavour of store-bought produce. My cooking felt uninspired, and I missed the vibrant tastes that only fresh, homegrown vegetables could provide. This realisation only strengthened my resolve to one day have a garden of my own.

That dream came true when my husband and I moved into a house with a backyard. We wasted no time transforming it into our little urban farm. From pots of herbs on the stoep to spinach nestled among decorative flowers, and even gooseberries and fig trees interspersed with our other garden plants, our backyard became a thriving oasis of fruits and vegetables. There’s a unique satisfaction in feeling the earth between your fingers and knowing that the produce you’re eating is the result of your own hard work and care.

While I might have a thriving vegetable garden now, it did not come without a bunch of learning curves, mistakes, and worst of all, accidentally killing a few plants!
